A suspected terrorist group is discovered in Germany, 8 arrested

Eight suspected members of a far-right group have been arrested in Saxony and elsewhere in Germany, including a local AfD politician. According to information, there was an incident during his arrest.
More than 450 police and special forces took part in the action taken in several places early on Tuesday morning. The crackdown came after months of investigations into a suspected far-right group calling itself "Saxon separatists". They were concentrated in the eastern German state of Saxony.
In a press release, the federal prosecutor's office in Karlsruhe justified the arrests by talking about the dangerousness of the 15 to 20 members. The militant group intended to prepare for an alleged X-Day in eastern Germany, in which it calculated the collapse of the social order. "In such a case, this group intended to occupy by force of arms areas in Saxony and, if necessary, in other eastern federal states, in order to create a state and a society according to the model of National Socialism." The terrorist group had also planned to "remove unwanted groups of people from the area through ethnic cleansing if necessary."
According to the security authorities, the ideology of the alleged members was characterized by "racist, anti-Semitic and partly apocalyptic ideas".
Combat training for house-to-house combat
Since its establishment in November 2020, the organization has reportedly been preparing for an overthrow of the system, including through repeated paramilitary training with combat equipment. According to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, "in particular, house-to-house fighting, the use of firearms, marches and night and forced patrols were practiced." The group has also received military equipment, such as camouflage suits, combat helmets, gas masks and protective vests.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser explained on the online platform X that the arrests were a success of early detection by Germany's domestic secret service, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution: "That training had been conducted on the use of weapons and the purchase of military equipment show how dangerous these right-wing extremists are", declared the social democratic politician.
According to investigations by several German media, at least three of those arrested are believed to have ties to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. One of them is the local Saxon politician Kurt H., who is part of the Grimmas city council for the AfD and the district chair of his party.
News magazine Spiegel reports that his arrest reportedly led to a shootout. According to the report, Kurt H. grabbed a gun. The exact course of events is unclear. According to information from ARD-Hauptstadtstudio and SWR, H. apparently tried to barricade himself inside. It is reported that a special police unit then fired a warning shot - also because H. himself reportedly had a gun in his hand. H. was arrested soon after, but reportedly had a gunshot wound to the chin. Investigators are studying whether this wound was caused by a police shot or by the suspect's weapon. For this reason, the AfD politician was hospitalized. Apparently, his life was never in danger.
Apparently, he had drawn attention in the past for his closeness to far-right networks: according to investigations by the "tageszeitung" newspaper, he apparently participated in the summer of 2024 in a so-called solar return festival , in which the murderous SS of Adolf Hitler's National Socialist dictatorship was honored. People close to the AfD leaders, Björn Höcke and Maximilian Krah, apparently also attended the party.
AfD politicians are targeted by German justice and security authorities: a trial is currently taking place in Frankfurt am Main against a group of Reichsbürger who allegedly planned a coup. Former Bundestag member of the AfD, Birgit Malsack-Winkelmann, is on trial because she is suspected of being a supporter of the organization. The former judge is also currently in custody.
AfD politicians: repeatedly targeted by justice
AfD's Bavarian MP, Daniel Halemba, is being investigated for inciting people and suspicions of money laundering, gang coercion and property damage.
And in 2024, one of AfD's most influential politicians, the president of AfD in the state of Thuringia, Björn Höcke, was twice sentenced to heavy fines for using the slogan of the infamous SA organization, from the time of the National Socialist dictatorship, in election campaign speeches.
The latest arrest of the Saxon AfD politician comes as Germany debates whether to ban the AfD. Many members of the Bundestag from different parties are preparing the relevant request for a possible procedure before the Federal Constitutional Court.
