The new Government of Serbia is elected

The Assembly of Serbia has elected the new Government of the country on Thursday after a debate of several hours and despite all the criticism from the opposition. With 152 votes for, 61 against and no abstentions, the deputies of the Assembly of Serbia voted for the new Government of Serbia on May 2.
The composition of the new Government was criticized in advance by the US Department of State, as two officials sanctioned by the United States are part of it. The new government will now be sworn in and then begin a new four-year term.
The representative of the composition of the Government of Serbia and the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in power, Miloš Vučević, during his speech in the Assembly of Serbia, stated that Serbia still has the strategic goal of membership in the European Union (EU).
Finally, the EU has officially conditioned the integration of Serbia on the normalization of relations with Kosovo.
Vucevic said that the EU's expectations are related to Serbia "humiliating" itself by recognizing the independence of Kosovo and joining the sanctions against Russia due to the occupation of Ukraine.
However, he emphasized that Serbia will not join the sanctions against Russia.
" There is no doubt that the pressures will continue, maybe they will intensify, but we are determined to stay in the same positions" , said Vučević.
" Serbia cannot and will not give up friendship with Russia, whose people we consider fraternal, as is the case with Ukrainians. We have clearly condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine, but we have declared that we will not join the policy of sanctions" , he said.
The government was formed four and a half months after extraordinary parliamentary elections in which progressives won more than half of the majority in the republican assembly. The deadline for the election of the new Government was May 6.
Aleksandar Vulin, former intelligence chief who has been under US sanctions since July 2023 - will be deputy prime minister in the new Serbian government.
Another official from the "black list" of the USA, due to ties with Russia, Nenad Popovic, will also be part of the Government as a minister without portfolio.
In a response to Radio Free Europe, the US Department of State stated that the US is "disappointed" by the proposal of Vulin and Popovic and added that both remain under sanctions, because the US position towards them is "known good".
Meanwhile, the current head of Serbian diplomacy, Ivica Dacic, will lead the Ministry of Internal Affairs, while the Minister of Defense will be Bratislav Gasic, until now the Minister of Police. Marko Gjuric, former ambassador of Serbia to the US and former director of the Office for Kosovo in Serbia, will join the Government as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The new government of Serbia takes office after the December elections, which the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won with a majority of votes.
The opposition coalitions, Serbia Against Violence and NADA, accused the SNS-led coalition of election theft.
Numerous irregularities during the extraordinary parliamentary, provincial and local elections, which were held on December 17 in Serbia, were also pointed out by international and local observation missions. The authorities, on the other hand, denied that there were major electoral irregularities./ Rel /
