Tirana International Airport launches direct flights between Tirana and Toronto, Canada

Tirana, June 19, 2026 – Tirana International Airport (TIA) announced today the launch of its first direct flight to Toronto, Canada. This new route marks a historic achievement for the aviation industry in Albania, being the first transoceanic flight in the country’s history.
The Airbus A330-200 aircraft, departing from Toronto, landed at TIA at 1:30 PM, where it was welcomed in a special ceremony by the Minister of Energy and Transport, Mr. Enea Karakaçi, as well as senior executives of Kastrati Group and TIA. At 4:00 PM, the first flight from Tirana to Toronto departed, paving the way for strengthening economic and cultural cooperation between Albania and Canada.
Air Transat, rated "World's Best Airline for Tourist Travel" by the Skytrax World Airline Awards, is TIA's newest partner and will operate one flight per week, every Friday, until October 8, 2026.
The aircraft of this line is dedicated to long-haul flights and guarantees a comfortable journey, with service according to the highest standards. The launch of this cooperation represents an important step in expanding the map of TIA's direct destinations and in improving air connections between Albania and North America.
The establishment of direct flights between Albania and Canada has an impact that goes beyond the borders of Albania; it will serve as a gateway to North America for the entire Western Balkans.
Thanks to the continuous investment of Kastrati Group, Tirana International Airport has been transformed into the busiest airport in the region and now meets modern aviation standards for intercontinental flights.
Piervittorio Farabbi, Chief Operating Officer of Tirana International Airport "Mother Teresa", described the establishment of Air Transat's direct route between Toronto and Tirana as a defining moment for Albania's air connections, - This first intercontinental flight from TIA opens a strategic gateway to the North Atlantic, bringing Albania closer to one of its most important diaspora communities and creating new opportunities for tourism, trade and investment. This new route reflects the growing international interest in Albania and the confidence that our global partners have in the Albanian market. We are proud of the partnership with Air Transat on this historic route and look forward to its success with optimism," said Mr. Farabbi.

Kryeministri i Shqipërisë, z. Edi Rama u shpreh se të dhënat e aeroportit të Tiranës janë të jashtëzakonshme, - Aeroporti i Tiranës prej disa vitesh mban vendin e parë në Europë për rritjen e numrit të pasagjerëve dhe mjafton shifra e ndryshuar e shtatë a nëntë viteve, nga 2016-a në 2025-ën, për të kuptuar se çfarë rritjeje marramendëse ka ndodhur me aeroportin e Tiranës.
Në 2016-n, kur filloi një fazë e re në punën e përbashkët për transformimin e mëtejshëm të aeroportit dhe modernizimin e aviacionit tonë civil, kishte vetëm 22 mijë fluturime në vit për 2.2 milionë pasagjerë. Më pak se 10 vite më vonë, numri i pasagjerëve arriti në 13.7 milionë dhe numri i fluturimeve në 82 mijë, një shifër që ne parashohim të kalojë 100 mijët në fund të kësaj dekade dhe në fillim të dekadës tjetër.
Ashtu si, nga ana tjetër, nuk është vetëm rritja e numrit të pasagjerëve, por është edhe përmirësimi i cilësisë së shërbimit. Aeroporti i Tiranës është një ndër aeroportet e para në Evropë që ka hedhur hapin e kalimit të dixhitalizuar të check-in-it dhe të check-out-it. Ndërkohë, së shpejti, po këtu, ne do të hapim një kapitull të ri të transformimit dixhital të aeroportit dhe të modernizimit të mëtejshëm të tij: kapitullin e portave dixhitale, të cilat do të jenë porta ku do të hyhet pa asnjë lloj kontrolli, nëse je shqiptar dhe nëse ke një pasaportë biometrike shqiptare, - tha z. “Më 30 maj, në Aeroportin Ndërkombëtar "Nënë Tereza", u regjistrua dita me numrin më të lartë të pasagjerëve në histori, me 51,420 pasagjerë në vetëm një ditë, - deklaroi Blendi Gonxhja, Ministër i Turizmit, Kulturës dhe Sportit. Ky rekord pasqyron rritjen e kërkesës për Shqipërinë, zgjerimin e lidhjeve me tregjet ndërkombëtare dhe efektivitetin e politikave tona për promovimin e vendit si një destinacion konkurrues gjatë gjithë vitit. Linjat ajrore direkte nga tregjet e mëdha të largëta si Amerika e Veriut janë strategjike, sepse sjellin udhëtarë që kanë qendrim të gjatë, afrojnë diasporën tonë dhe gjenerojnë turizëm cilësor” tha z. Gonxhe.
