Donald Trump warns of increased tariffs on the EU if it does not invest $600

US President Donald Trump has warned the European Union that tariffs on European imports could rise from 15% to 35% if the EU does not fulfill its pledge to invest $600 billion in the US economy.

This statement was made in a weekly interview, according to Barron's reporting.

Foreign media report that Donald Trump has doubts about respecting the trade agreement he made with Ursula von der Leyen, after threatening additional tariffs if the Europeans do not implement their commitments.

Europeans accepted 15% tariffs on products they would export to the US, after Donald Trump initially announced 30% in April. However, ten days after the agreement, the US president resumed his threats.

In an interview with CNBC, Trump said the US would impose 35% tariffs on the European Union if the EU does not fulfill its commitment to invest $600 billion in the US.
The preliminary agreement, signed in late July 2025 by Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland, provides for:

15% tariff on most European imports to the US.
$600 billion in EU investment in the US by 2028,

Purchases of American energy by the EU, with a volume of around 750 billion dollars.

According to Trump, if the investment never arrives, tariffs will immediately increase to 35% and could reach levels of up to 250% for pharmaceutical products or chips in an 18-month period.
