Bird flu causes egg price hike, expert: Unjustified increase, we have 7 million

" Hello, I want 10 village eggs ."

" Yes, of course, but the price has increased by 5 lek from today, from 30 to 35 lek ."

In poultry farms, bird flu has been more aggressive than in rural farms.

The bird flu in Albania has also led to an increase in the price of eggs, the destruction of 430 thousand chickens has made an egg cost the consumer 66.6% more, which in cash means 10 lek more.

But for agricultural experts, this price change is abusive by traders.

" It is an unjustified increase because we have 7 million heads and 5 million of them are for egg production, I think this has to do with the establishment of monopolies in this market in Albania. There are very few companies that deal with their import and export, and this makes it easy for these companies to set prices ," said Ndoc Fasllia, an agricultural expert.

The destruction of 430,000 chickens has so far not led to a shortage of this product in the markets.

"If the situation worsens, then there is room for intervention by the Ministry of Agriculture to mitigate the cost of production or to take measures to replace these birds, but today we are not at this stage as the damage is very small," the agricultural expert further adds.

This is not a new situation for either the poultry business or the consumer. In 2022, half a million chickens were destroyed as a result of bird flu. At that time, an egg in the market cost 30 lek, while a village egg cost 50 lek. / TCh
