Inflation at the beginning of the year exceeds Europe/ The rate in January is recorded at 2.3%

According to monthly data published by the Institute of Statistics, inflation measured by the European method (HICP) in January 2026 resulted at 2.3%, signaling a moderate increase in the overall price level in the economy at the start of the year.

Official data shows that the average inflation in Europe is estimated at around 2%, placing Albania slightly above this level during January. This means that prices in the country have increased faster than the European average. Meanwhile, the countries with the highest inflation rate in Europe during this month are Romania with 8.5%, Georgia with 5.1%, Iceland with 4.4%, Slovakia with 4.3% and Estonia with 3.8%.

In the regional analysis, Albania appears in a relatively more favorable position compared to some of its neighboring countries. North Macedonia records the highest inflation in the region at 2.9%, followed by Serbia and Montenegro at 2.7%.

Regarding changes by consumer basket group, the largest price increase was recorded in the group “Entertainment, sports and culture” with 9.8%. This group is followed by “Personal care, social protection and various goods and services” with 3.7%, “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco” and “Insurance and financial services” with 3.1% each, as well as “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” with 2.3%, categories that have a significant share in household expenses.

Increases were also recorded in “Educational services” by 2.2%, “Furniture, household equipment and home maintenance” and “Restaurants and accommodation services” by 2.0% each, “Health” by 1.1%, “Clothing and footwear” by 0.9%, “Rent, water, electricity, gas and other fuels” by 0.7% and “Information and communication” by 0.6%. On the other hand, prices in the “Transport” group decreased by 0.7%, contributing to the slowdown in the overall inflation rate. /SCAN
