Demographic crisis reflected in higher education, University of Tirana reduces

The decline in the number of students has forced the University of Tirana to reduce admission quotas for the new academic year.

For the year 2025–2026, this university will accept only 4,400 new students, down from 4,546 the year before.

The Faculty of History and Philology marks the most significant decrease in quotas, with a reduction of 13%.

The Faculty of Foreign Languages has also reduced quotas by 11%, while the Social Sciences will accept 530 students in Bachelor's programs.

Overall, in the last 6 years, admissions to the University of Tirana have shrunk by over 18%. In 2020, the number of new students was over 5,500, while this year the figure has dropped to 4,400.

On the other hand, three faculties have not changed their admission quotas.

The Faculty of Economics will again admit 1,200 students, Natural Sciences around 900, and Law will maintain its usual level of 670 students.

The reduction in quotas is directly related to the increasingly low interest of young people in pursuing higher education, as well as the demographic decline of the school-age population.
