Onion crisis, prices soar due to reduced production in Korça

These days, a kilogram of onions of poor quality is being sold for 120 lek, almost double compared to the same period last year.

In addition to the high price, the market lacks red onion that also has the highest quality.

Onion is a basic product in Albanian cuisine, one of the most sought-after vegetables in the market. Its presence has never been problematic since the cultivation time is short and it grows in all regions of the country.

Traders these days are facing great difficulties in onion supplies due to the reduction of production in the Korca area, which realizes even the largest quantities of the product.

Nevion Telha, agronomist in the Korca area, said that the area planted with onions was significantly reduced last season. The reduction of the surface has several reasons, explains the specialist.

First, the rural population is shrinking and more and more land is left barren.

Secondly, last season there was a tendency to plant other crops such as potatoes, corn and wheat instead of onions.

The war in Ukraine that brought an unusual increase in grain prices prompted Albanian farmers to plant grain. Korça is one of the areas with the most suitable climate and soil in the country for cereal production. However, as the production of cereals has increased, meeting a part of the consumption needs in the district, deficits have been created in other crops, such as onions.

Climatic conditions make Albania competitive in Agriculture, especially in the production of vegetables and greens, for which the demand is always increasing, but the Albanian governments over the years have not followed policies to develop the sector in a sustainable way, leaving the farmers today days at the mercy of markets and weather risks./Monitor
