The government makes the decision, increases the minimum wage to 50 thousand

The government has approved the increase in the monthly minimum wage from 40 thousand to 50 thousand lekë, materializing another commitment undertaken towards citizens and the labor market. The decision is expected to have a direct impact on approximately 307,850 registered employees in the public and private sectors, who are currently paid at or close to the minimum level.

According to the government's assessment, the increase in the minimum wage aims to protect the standard of living of employees, strengthen human capital and improve the standard of living for thousands of Albanian families. In a context of the rising cost of living and inflationary pressures of recent years, the measure is seen as a corrective instrument to preserve the purchasing power of low-income workers.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Delina Ibrahimaj, has emphasized that this decision goes beyond a nominal wage increase, having an important role in the formalization of the labor market. The increase in the minimum wage is expected to contribute to reducing informality, encouraging the real declaration of wages and the respect of legal labor contracts, especially in sectors with high employment intensity.

From a macroeconomic perspective, the minimum wage is also considered a mechanism that affects domestic consumption, as increased income for those with a higher propensity to consume translates into greater demand in the economy. This is expected to have a knock-on effect on economic activity, especially in the services and trade sectors.

The government argues that the economy grows and consolidates when work is valued and the dignity of workers is placed at the center of public policies. In this context, the increase in the minimum wage is seen as part of a broader approach to strengthening the labor market, increasing productivity, and creating a more sustainable basis for the country's economic and social development.

The decision enters into force on January 1, 2026 and will be accompanied by monitoring by the institutions responsible for its implementation in the public and private sectors.
