Can tea bags cause cancer? Here's what the experts say

Starting the morning with a fresh cup of tea can be a perfect start to the day. But if you're someone who starts the day with tea bags for a hot cup, it's time to stop. Did you know that your tea bag could be doing you more harm than good?

A study by researchers at McGill University in Montreal shows that a single plastic bag can release harmful particles into your cup - 11.6 billion microplastics (fragments of any type of plastic less than 5mm in length) and 3.1 billion nanoplastics (pieces extremely small or plastic particles).

Recently, nutritionist Rashi Chowdhary took to Instagram to share the effects of these harmful toxins released into tea from tea bags. "Tea bags release billions of micro and nano plastics into hot water. Nylon ones are the worst culprit of polypropylene (a type of plastic),” she said.

Dr Chowdhary added that paper tea bags have "a chemical called epichlorohydrin, which is used so that the bag does not break". "Epichlorohydrin leaches into hot water and is a potential carcinogen (a substance that can cause cancer) and reproductive toxin," she informed. The nutritionist called it "scary" as many with hormonal problems use tea bags.

Ekspertët sugjeruan se duhet të preferohet përdorimi i gjetheve të çajit pluhur ose të lirshme në vend të qeseve të çajit. Dr Dalal shtoi se mund të përdorni një qese çaji me bazë pëlhure për të mbajtur larg të gjitha problemet e tilla.

"Or you can learn to read the ingredients," added Dr Chowdhary. Revealing her struggles, she said: "I've been battling Endometriosis and the last thing I want is more plastic on a daily basis, multiple times a day to trigger my hormones again."
