What happens if your pet eats avocado?

The avocado tree thrives in tropical regions and its fruit is widely consumed by people around the world. A fungicidal toxin, persin, has been isolated from the leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of the tree, which is considered potentially poisonous to dogs and cats according to research.

It should be noted that avocado poisoning has been documented by research in most animal species, however, only a few suspected cases have been investigated in dogs and none in cats.

The toxic substance persin is considered responsible for necrosis of mammary gland epithelium and myocardial endothelium in cases of intoxication after avocado consumption. In addition, consumption of an increased amount of avocado is capable of leading to the induction of pancreatitis. However, the exact mechanism of induction of this specific toxicity remains unknown.

The degree of toxicity varies between different species of the plant, with the common Guatemalan variety appearing to be the most toxic. However, since these varieties cannot be morphologically distinguished from each other, consumption of any part of the plant by domestic animals is strictly prohibited.

Clinical symptoms: In the two dog cases published to date, symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea due to irritation of the gastrointestinal mucosa, abdominal bloating, mild fatigue, and difficulty breathing.

Clinical examination, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests revealed findings consistent with right-sided congestive heart failure. The exact lethal dose is unknown and the outcome varies depending on the species of animal.

Diagnosis is based purely on history, as there are neither pathognomonic clinical or laboratory findings nor any known diagnostic technique to confirm avocado poisoning. Treatment of avocado poisoning can only be symptomatic and proportional to the clinical symptoms that occur.
