Top foods to avoid if you have thyroid problems

The thyroid is an important gland at the base of your neck. It creates and produces hormones that work with many different systems throughout your body, including the release and control of hormones that control metabolism, which is the process by which the food you take into your body is converted into energy.
If you suffer from thyroid disease, it is because this gland produces too much or too little of these hormones.
There are different types of thyroid conditions, such as hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which can be caused by a variety of things, such as iodine deficiency or even genetics. Registered dietitian Molly Hembree, MS, RD, LD, notes that the most common thyroid condition is an underactive thyroid, or "hypothyroidism."
“Often a big side effect of hypothyroidism is weight gain ,” says Hembree. “It’s important if you experience unintentional weight gain, especially if it doesn’t seem to be consistent with your current diet and exercise habits, to talk to your doctor to address any underlying issues, which can include hypothyroidism in some cases.”
Watching what you eat can have a big impact on the effects of your thyroid condition, and according to Hembree, the No. 1 worst food to avoid if you've been diagnosed with thyroid problems are foods that contain bronchodilators. " Grouthogens are foods that contain a compound called goitrin, which can affect thyroid hormone synthesis when combined with iodine deficiency," says Hembree.
According to her, bronchogenics include raw cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, as well as soybeans and millet. However, to get rid of some of their potential negative effects, you can simply cook them lightly.
“ Heating cruciferous vegetables eliminates their bronchogenic action,” Hembree says. “And if you eat raw cruciferous vegetables and soy in moderation, it doesn’t seem to pose a threat to thyroid health. However, most dietitians advise eliminating millet from your diet completely ,” he continues.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers found that a balanced diet plays an important role when it comes to addressing your thyroid problems. Consuming too much of one food while completely excluding another can affect the way your gland works. For example, too much fat and iodine.
Also, some unknown nutrients found in vegetables can be bronchogenic when consumed in large quantities. As Hembree mentioned, one such case is cabbage and other members of the Brassica family.
As always, however, before making significant changes to your diet, it is important to consult your doctor.
