The president of the Council of State of Italy has passed away

Franco Frattini, president of the Council of State of Italy and former foreign minister, died at the age of 65.

He had been suffering from a serious illness for some time.

Franco Frattini was a deputy in Italy in the period 1996-2004 and 2008-2013. He held the position of Foreign Minister in the Berlusconi 2 (2002-2004) and Berlusconi 4 (2004-2008) governments.

Since last January 14, Frattini was the president of the State Council.

Frattini is known in Albania as one of the most supportive Italian politicians for Albania and the Albanians as head of diplomacy in the neighboring country but also in the positions he has held in the European Union. 4 years ago he was honored by the then President Ilir Meta with the "Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu" Decoration. This evaluation is given in a special way for the support in the visa-free movement process of Albanians in Europe. Franco Frattini was also honored by the mayor Erion Veliaj with the title of honorary citizen in 2018. Frattini during the visit highlighted the great transformation that Tirana has undergone.

Frattini has played a decisive role as Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Justice, Freedoms and Security, who conceived and initiated the implementation of the visa liberalization process for the Western Balkans. Meanwhile, as the Foreign Minister of Italy, he has been the main protagonist in supporting the full and final implementation of this process.
