What is the origin of the terms Mafia and Cosa Nostra?

The first document alluding to a "mafia clan", to describe brotherhoods involved in criminal activities, signed by the prosecutor of the Great Criminal Court of Trapani, dates from 1837. The term mafia, however, became a current expression only after the performance of the popular drama 'I mafiusi di la Vicaria (The Mafiosi of the Vicaria), in 1863.
AMERICAN MAFIA
The origin of Cosa Nostra, "our thing", is a term that has come into journalistic use to define the American mafia and is associated with great, shared wealth.
Between the landed gentry, inheritors of one of Europe's last feudal systems, and the peasants, a brotherhood was formed, which dominated everything through repression.
Today, Cosa Nostra, apart from Italy, is also present in the United States, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, France, Great Britain and Russia.
Other mafia organizations are the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta, the Neapolitan Camorra and the Pulian Sacra Corona Unita./ Pergatiti Alfapress.al/
