From the Sea or Mine / What is the Right Salt?

If the package of salt you buy does not clearly state sea salt, then what you are buying is not sea salt. In reality, you are buying what is called rock salt in Albanian.

Mines or the sea are the main sources of table salt. Rock salt is obtained in salt mines and is produced through an industrial process that culminates in the removal of impurities from the starting product.

While sea salt is obtained by evaporating seawater, it has a higher mineral content compared to rock salt and is therefore considered a healthier alternative.

Despite this, rock salt takes up more space on the table, as it is cheaper and widely used.

It undergoes a refining process that strips it of all its natural minerals. The salt is then enriched with additional iodine to give it greater health benefits.

Sea salt is gaining popularity as a healthier alternative to rock salt. However, it is more expensive.

The presence of natural minerals such as iodine, magnesium, and potassium give it a fresher and lighter flavor than table salt.

Sea salt and rock salt have the same chemical composition: sodium chloride. The real difference between the two lies in taste and content.

Sea salt is the winner in this challenge. Sea salt enthusiasts oppose the use of common rock salt used on the table, arguing that this salt loses all its natural minerals and is harmful to the human body since it plays a role in fluid accumulation.

Since sea salt is naturally rich in minerals, it helps regulate blood pressure, stabilizes heart rate, balances blood sugar levels, improves the absorption of nutrients that speed up digestion, and cleanses the lungs.

Sea salt is not as pure a color as table salt, which comes from rock salt. It usually has very light shades of pink that are indicative of its mineral content.

Another difference between these products is that sea salt is often added to food after cooking or at the last stage of its preparation. This is done to preserve the minerals it contains, as high temperatures tend to destroy them.

Some researchers believe that the days of table salt, which is made from rock salt, are over. They use the term “dead salt” precisely because of its lack of minerals. Sea salt, on the other hand, is “living salt” with all its flavors, values, and minerals intact.
