British Ambassador: This opposition believes its role is only to block

Great Britain's Ambassador Nicholas Abbott has stated that Albania needs a more constructive opposition and one that is more engaged with political alternatives, saying that he currently sees only a blocking approach that, according to him, often dominates the opposition debate in the country.

In an interview for "Off The Record" with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN, the British ambassador said that the opposition should not see its role only as an obstacle to the government, but as a force that offers concrete solutions and alternatives.

"We can make the argument that the opposition in Parliament and the opposition parties have a key role to play and in our system we talk precisely about the loyal opposition, because it is an opposition that should be there to challenge the government, to challenge its policies and to challenge the government's proposals, often by offering other options. I think the challenge here is often that the opposition believes that its role is only to block and that is not helpful, it is not constructive", said Abbott.

The British Ambassador further emphasized that political competition only works when citizens are offered real alternatives.

"Albania needs an opposition that is willing to engage on the problems, that is willing to ensure that it can offer alternatives. Because this is ultimately what political competition is all about," he declared.

During the interview on "Off The Record", Abbott also revealed that he has chosen to focus more on young MPs, as, according to him, that is where he sees the potential and future of Albanian politics.
