Auron Tare: Albania has failed to protect its forests! In the South, the historic part of the country burned...

Researcher Auron Tare has given shocking testimony about the extent of the fires that are destroying protected areas and historical treasures of the country. Invited to an interview on Syri TV, he said that the destruction he has seen in the Drino, Vjosa and Delvina Valleys is similar to the massive fires of 1913, when the Greek army occupied these territories. Tare emphasizes that last evening was dramatic, where in addition to nature, a historical part of the city of Delvina was also burned.

He criticizes the state's inability to build a functional system for protecting forests and the environment, underlining that for three decades Albania has failed to create effective policies for protecting the ecosystem.

Auron Tare: I have been in the South these days and have just returned from there, and I have seen with my own eyes extremely large fires. I think that the Drino and Vjosa valley, Delvina I believe only in 1913 when the Greek army came and did a massive burning of the area...only then could they have seen such destruction, fires. It was a...especially last night, at night, it was an extremely, very serious situation, a historical part of Delvina was also burned, those old buildings.

I think that today I don't believe that there is any place for words without concreteness. There needs to be a concrete analysis of responsibility, of the entire chain of responsibility of people for this very unfortunate event that continues to happen.

And I say that for at least 30 years Albania has been unable to implement a system to preserve one of its priceless assets, which is its forests and ecosystem. And I can tell you from my humble experience when I was running the Butrint Park, we had the same problem then and we solved it in a very simple way, by gathering the shepherds, making it clear to them that they could no longer take the ancient area for grazing and of course at that time the fires did not occur in the Butrint Park.
