Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj is celebrating his 46th birthday in prison today. But in a Facebook post, Veliaj chose to thank all those who sent him congratulatory letters.

"I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking care of my mother, wife and little son during these 10 months," writes Erion Veliaj.

The mayor considers the year we are leaving behind absurd, however, he emphasizes that he has discovered friends in difficult times.

"I was immensely happy to receive your letters and congratulations here in Durrës, on this unusual birthday."

This has been an absurd year, but I discovered friends from the hard days that I will never forget!
