He requested freedom from prison, the hearing at the GJKKO for former President

The hearing at the Criminal Court for the former Head of State, Ilir Meta, who requested freedom, has concluded.

It is learned that the hearing against the President of the PL has been postponed, this because Judge Erjon Bani has declared his incompetence to decide regarding the replacement of the security measure "prison arrest" for Ilir Meta.

The declaration of incompetence was made following the request of lawyer Kujtim Cakrani, this because Erjon Bani was not the judge in Ilir Meta's case, but was willing.

The former Head of State himself was not present at the hearing and was represented by his lawyers.

Also absent from the courtroom were the three prosecutors in the case, the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, Arben Kraja, and Sotir Kllapi.

"Without a doubt, the Court will take its time within 3 months, it must be expressed. Which falls within the month of October, we will have a decision of the Constitutional Court. Our battle will continue for the other measure which was overturned on June 26th.

All our documentation for the European Court of Human Rights. The Gëlçi case, the most flagrant case of abuse of the law, is a slap that the Court of Human Rights has given to the Court here.

"Ilir Meta will be released, there is no reason for him to remain in detention. The battle will continue," said his lawyer.

On August 6, Ilir Meta's legal representatives submitted to the GJKKO the request for the replacement of the personal security measure against their client.

The request argued that SPAK had completed the investigations into Ilir Meta, and consequently, the continuation of the detention measure no longer had a procedural basis.

We recall that on August 4, Ilir Meta was informed at SPAK of the closure of the investigations by the Special Prosecution Office into the LSI lobbying file in the US and the CEZ-DIA affair.

Ilir Meta's lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, at the end of the session, said that the prosecutors did not bring anything new, either from the investigation into CEZ-DIA or the lobbying file in the US.

The lawyer emphasized that they will fight the battle in court through a regular process and not an abbreviated one, which is expected to be a long legal process.

Former President Meta is accused by the Special Prosecution Office of three corruption cases; for the file known as CEZ-DIA; for obtaining monetary values in exchange for influence exercised in favor of a telecommunications company; as well as for the suspected corrupt relationship with a businessman.

He is also accused of consulting and lobbying contracts in the United States of America, laundering the proceeds of crime in the purchase of a house in Tirana, and failing to declare medical expenses for the period 2013-2019.

SPAK has also filed similar charges against MP Monika Kryemadhi, Meta's ex-wife. Former AKEP leader Pirro Xhixho is accused of passive corruption. Apart from Meta, who is in prison, the others are being investigated while at large.
