Rama promised with great fanfare/ The bridge over the Buna River that would

The construction of a bridge over the Buna River that would connect Velipoja with Ulcinj in Montenegro, significantly shortening distances, is no longer a government priority.

Three years after the idea was first presented, at a meeting between Prime Ministers Rama and Abazovic within the framework of the 'Open Balkans' in Ohrid, and after the ups and downs and efforts to launch the project's implementation, it is no longer on the list of projects of national importance.

At the government meeting in late July, a change was made regarding projects of national importance with 'mature' status, and it results that the project of the bridge over the Buna has been removed.

In fact, it was not even among the projects with 'partially mature' or 'immature' status. In the previous decision adopted in February 2025, the construction of the bridge over the Buna River was on the list of projects with 'mature' status, with an indicative fund of 14 million euros and the Albanian Development Fund was charged with its implementation.

Authorities in both countries have repeatedly insisted that the project will be realized and will not remain simply in 3D. But apparently, the change of government in Montenegro, with the departure of the Albanian Abazovic and the arrival of the Montenegrin Spajic in October 2023, also changed the direction of priorities.

The 300-meter-long bridge would have two lanes, sidewalks and bicycle paths, and a height of about 10 meters above the highest water level, enabling river traffic. It was planned to be built with the joint financial contribution of the two countries. At the time of the presentation, as well as the signing of the agreement for its construction, the value of the project was estimated at a total of 20 million euros.

The bridge was expected to significantly accelerate the connection between the two tourist spots, reducing the current distance of 73 km to just 1 km and connecting about 34 km of beaches frequented by over 500 thousand tourists each year. The authorities also planned a cooperation for joint operation of the lake cruise and the development of a joint tourist project on both sides of the Buna. / Ekofin.al
