Rama: Albania opened its doors to Afghans when others closed them

Prime Minister Edi Rama declared today, on International Volunteer Day, that Albania showed with the Afghans that the greatness of the spirit is not measured by geographical or economic size.
Present at the 10th anniversary ceremony of the "Different Weekend" volunteer initiative, Rama said that our country opened its doors to Afghans when others closed them.
"Charity is not a gesture, nor an event. It is a discipline," he said, adding that true generosity is not related to giving what is in excess, but to the willingness to open up to others and see them as a mirror of oneself.
Rama then brought to attention one of the recent challenges, such as the case of sheltering Afghan citizens, emphasizing that Albania chose to act with humanity at a time when many other countries did not take that step.
He said that our country showed that the greatness of the spirit is not measured by geographical or economic size, but by the willingness to help.
"It was a moment when America left them behind, dragging all of NATO with it. All those whom it had brought out of the darkness with a great promise, with the promise that with the arrival of America and NATO in Afghanistan everything would change in their lives."
And suddenly, in the blink of an eye, it was all over for those people.
There I saw a different America. I understood the extraordinary strength of that country, when people from the most diverse backgrounds, who in their daily lives live in different camps, like you here today, came together.
And strange phone calls would come in, asking for help, asking for help here from Albania, because we became the only country that opened the doors to Afghans, who, to put it bluntly, were too Muslim to be welcome in many other NATO countries, or they weren't as much of a burden as they should be.
While we did this act and many others were involved along with the state, precisely for what I said before, because in those who suddenly realized that they were left at the mercy of a mob of murderers, we saw the mirror where our soul was reflected.
And our spirit, despite being among the smallest and least wealthy countries in NATO, could not be smaller than the spirit of those who may be richer and greater than us," Rama declared.
The Prime Minister praised the role of the "Different Weekend" Foundation, describing it as a moral institution of Albanian society that has raised "habits of the heart" and created a new culture of solidarity, where hope and charity go hand in hand and influence all dimensions of community life.
Rama emphasized the importance of the continuity of this initiative, expressing special appreciation for its founder, Arbër Hajdari, and for all the volunteers who have been contributing without reserve for 10 years.
“'Fundjava Ndryshe' is a gym of hope and a trainer of the discipline of charity,” he said, underlining that only through the training of hope and the discipline of charity can society build lasting goodness and faith in the future.
