Albania-Iran, a decade of conflict because of the Mujahideen

The decision of the outgoing government of Sali Berisha and the confirmation by the new Prime Minister Edi Rama to accept thousands of Iranian oppositionists in Albania would have strained relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran a decade ago.
For 10 years, accusations and counter-accusations would be exchanged between Tirana and Tehran, as well as the position against each other in matters of their national interest.
But from the statement, it was moved to actions. Albania would accuse Iran of planning terrorist attacks in the country during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. It was reported in the media that the Iranians had planned attacks in the match that the Albanian national team would play against Israel. The government reacted by expelling Iranian diplomats, including Iran's ambassador.
Iran, in response, accused Albania of fabricating under American and Israeli pressure.
In January 2020, following the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani by US forces, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani gave speeches insulting Albania as "a small and evil country" that is being used to overthrow the Islamic regime in Iran.
The statements were condemned by Tirana.
The cyber attacks of July 15, 2022 against Albanian state agencies dealt a severe blow to relations with Iran. On September 7, Prime Minister Edi Rama accused Iran of being behind the attacks and announced the closure of the embassy in Tirana and the severance of diplomatic relations with Iran.
But less than a year after this decision, Iran returned to Albania through Turkey. A special section has been opened by Tehran within the Turkish Embassy, which aims to protect Iranian interests in our country.
