Dietrich Mateschitz, the founder of Red Bull, has died at the age of 78 after a serious illness . Considered the richest man in Austria, the entrepreneur built a global empire around energy drinks. He owned 49% of the shares of Red Bull, which also owns the F1 team of the same name.
The remaining 51% belongs to the Yoovidhya family, with whom Mateschitz had collaborated for the production of energy drinks of the same name. Mr. Mateschitz's fortune is estimated at around 25 billion euros, placing him 51st on the Forbes list of the world's richest people.
He used his energy drink fortune to set up the team from Formula 1. "It's very, very sad, what a great man," said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, adding that what he has done for many people, around the world in different sports, it is invaluable.
Mateschitz's death is not thought to threaten the future of Red Bull or its sister team Alpha Tauri. Formula chief executive Stefano Domenicali said he was "deeply saddened" and called Mateschitz "a hugely respected and much-loved member of the Formula 1 family".
"He was an extraordinary visionary entrepreneur and a man who helped transform our sport and created the Red Bull brand that is recognized around the world," he added, among other things.
