Scandal of the US ambassador to Greece, Trump "sends" Rubio to Athens

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Greece on October 6-7, his first trip to the country since taking office. The US State Department has confirmed that Rubio will lead the US delegation to the sixth round of the US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, which will focus on defense cooperation, regional security and energy.
But the visit also comes at a delicate moment for the US Embassy in Athens. Greek media also see Rubio's trip as a signal of support for US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, who has been embroiled in controversy following reports in the Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal has reported on Guilfoyle's activity in promoting energy deals in Southeast Europe and her relationship with a registered lobbyist representing the Greek company Aktor.
The reports have raised questions in the US about the use of diplomatic posts and prompted senior Democrats in Congress to call on the State Department to review the ambassador's activities. Guilfoyle and her representatives have denied that she acted inappropriately.
Other reports related to the issue have attributed Guilfoyle with statements about Washington's ability to influence political developments in allied countries.
Rubio, meanwhile, has come out publicly in support of the ambassador just days before his arrival in Athens.
“Ambassador Guilfoyle has been extremely effective in promoting the President’s agenda in Greece and throughout Europe,” Rubio said. He also praised her role in advancing U.S. energy interests in Greece and Southeast Europe, specifically mentioning the Vertical Energy Corridor.
Beyond the controversy surrounding the ambassador, Rubio's visit has a broad strategic agenda. One of the main issues will be energy and the role that Washington intends to give Greece as a hub for supplying Southeast Europe, including through American liquefied natural gas.
Another focal point will be the sixth round of the US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, a mechanism launched in 2018. The talks will include military cooperation and the support that Greece provides under the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement.
Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and energy interconnection projects are also expected to be on the table. According to “Kathimerini”, the discussions take place as Athens examines issues related to a possible expansion of territorial waters south of Crete to 12 nautical miles and the resumption of seabed studies for the Great Sea Interconnector energy project between Greece and Cyprus.
The war in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East are also expected to be part of the diplomatic agenda. During his stay in Athens, Rubio is expected to hold talks with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
