The best players of the match in Northern Europe are not rewarded with trophies, but with... potatoes, eggs and meat!
In most major European leagues, the best player of the match is rewarded with a fancy trophy and a photo op in front of the cameras, a now-common ritual. But in Nordic leagues, the "MVPs" are honored in a very unusual way: with food.
The latest case comes from the Danish Superliga, where Maxime Soulas, the French defender of Sonderjyske, was named man of the match after a brilliant performance and a goal against Nordsjaelland. His prize? A cart filled with 55 kilograms of potatoes!
It seems strange, but this is not an isolated incident. In Norway, in the Eliteserien, Bryne goalkeeper Jan de Boer was awarded four boxes of eggs, while a teammate had previously received a live lamb as a gift. And the list goes on: another footballer left the field with 40 packages of oatmeal, 100 eggs and 20 liters of milk, while a player from the Varhaug team received 22.6 kilograms of pork as a “trophy”.
These awards, while not luxurious, are quite practical and attract attention for their originality. Instead of a trophy to gather dust on a shelf, players return home with consumable products, a unique way to honor their performance on the field.
While the world of football increasingly moves towards marketing and spectacle, in northern Europe tradition, simplicity and a unique sense of humor continue to triumph.
