Following the resignation of federal president Gabriele Gravina, Gigi Buffon has also resigned from his position. The former head of the Italian national team says goodbye to his duties a day after the defeat to Bosnia, which cost the "Azzurri" their third consecutive World Cup exit. The former captain, who had initially expressed his willingness to stay until June, announced his decision in a post on Instagram.
“Now that President Gravina has chosen to take a step back,” Buffon wrote, “I feel free to do what I feel is an act of responsibility. My resignation one minute after the end of the match against Bosnia was a necessary act, one that came from deep within me. Spontaneous as the tears and that heartache that I know I share with all of you. I was asked to delay to give everyone time to reflect properly.”
Buffon then explained the nature of his gesture, stressing that "it is right to leave the freedom to whoever comes after me to choose the figure he considers best to fill my role." He added that "the objective was to return the national team to the World Cup and we did not achieve it."
Regarding his contribution, the former number one said: "I have sought to interpret my duty by putting all my energy, looking at all sectors to be a connecting link, dialogue and synergy between different young people, trying to structure, together with the various responsible parties, a project that, starting from the youngest, reaches the U21 National Team." He emphasized the importance of reviewing the way in which the future talents of the great National Team are educated, seeking and ensuring the inclusion of figures with strong experience for medium-term and long-term changes, based on meritocracy and specialization.
In the end, Buffon concluded with a greeting: "I keep everything in my heart, with gratitude for the privilege and the lesson that, even in this painful epilogue, this intense experience leaves me. The Azzurri force always."
