"A good Albanian is a dead Albanian"/ FIBA launches investigation into racist chants in the Macedonia-Romania match
A basketball match between North Macedonia and Romania has turned into an international scandal after serious racist chants towards Albanians in the stands by fans.
"A good Albanian is a dead Albanian", "Gas chamber for Albanians" and "Clean Macedonia" were some of the calls that were heard in the hall, where senior state officials were also present, including Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, who claimed that he "had not heard them".
FIBA has launched an official investigation and strongly condemned the hate speech, while strong reactions have come from Kosovo and Albania. President Vjosa Osmani called the incident unacceptable, while Elisa Spiropali stressed that "hate speech has no place in sport."
The Criminal Code of North Macedonia provides for imprisonment of up to 5 years for inciting ethnic hatred, but it remains to be seen whether there will be a concrete punishment.
