Spanish tourist group trapped in Nivica Canyon

A group of Spanish tourists are in danger of their lives after being trapped in the deep and difficult Nivica canyon, one of the wildest and least explored areas in southern Albania.
The event was announced by renowned researcher and activist of cultural and natural heritage, Auron Tare.
He raised the alarm through a public post, confirming that the situation is critical and that the authorities have been notified immediately.
"Police and fire forces have headed to the site to assist in the rescue operation," Tare announced, emphasizing the difficulties of the terrain and the danger this area poses to anyone who visits it without preparation and without a local guide.
Meanwhile, police forces from Gjirokastra equipped with drones have also come to help.
He also remembers that just the day before, he had warned that no one should enter the Nivica canyon without the presence of a local guide.
"This is a wild and dangerous area if you don't know the terrain. It's not a place for free exploration, " Tare wrote.
It is reported that the Spaniards had stated that they had received permission to enter the area from the Ministry of Tourism, and had decided to enter the canyon without a local guide.
Currently, there is still no detailed information on the tourists' health condition or their exact location within the canyon.
Authorities are on the ground and are working urgently to undertake a rescue operation, while the arrival of specialized teams for mountain operations and interventions in difficult terrain is expected.
