Kurum's hazardous waste/ Klodiana Lala: Structured criminal group, ministers should be investigated by SPAK!

Journalist Klodiana Lala, invited to the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV, spoke about the affair with the hazardous waste of Kurum, which resulted in 33 arrests, 26 of which were prison sentences. 

Lala chronologically explained the investigations into what she considered the most serious environmental crime and stated that investigations into high-ranking officials are lacking. The journalist added that we are facing a structured criminal group, and that the matter should be investigated by SPAK. 

"There are 33 arrest measures, 26 are prison arrests. Of these, 20 security measures have been executed."

Erdal Demir, the administrator of Kurum, and Yusuf Sezai Kurum, also this administrator by proxy, are wanted. Gjovana Sokolaj, her husband, Doni Sokolaj, and other officials who have not been arrested.

The security measures that were signed by the Durrës Prosecutor's Office and based on the responses it was confirmed that the waste was hazardous, the Prosecutor's Office addressed the court with a request for the assignment of security measures. It has confirmed that smuggling of hazardous waste and a series of criminal offenses have been committed.

In 2024, the Basel network raised a claim at the time that hazardous waste had been sent to Thailand, it was confirmed that it belonged to Kurum, which had a contract with Sokolaj shpk, they had a contract to send the waste for export in the amount of 50 thousand tons. 2800 tons were sent in 102 containers. After the alarm, the cargo was returned after a long time, towards Albania.

The prosecution has confirmed that Doni Sokolaj, knowing what waste was inside, went so far as to threaten the transport company, so that the waste would not be returned to Albania, as he had found new buyers in Turkey. The waste was returned and remained in Porto Romano, under police custody.

The fact that the waste was confirmed to be hazardous makes the issue even more concerning. Albanian authorities are unable to dispose of this waste. According to the Prosecution, Kurum and Sokolaj knew that there was no zinc oxide, but ash from Kurum's chimneys, in violation of national and international laws.

There are also measures against customs officials. There are also measures against Arta Dollani, former director of the National Environmental Agency, who did not monitor the large amounts of waste from Kurum and other companies, but licensed them illegally, which has brought consequences.

What have I seen that is wrong? Can this scandal be closed with just these people? I don't think it can be closed here.

The Sokolaj company is not a coincidence, but it is suspected that other hazardous waste has also been exported. There are three other exports before this one. Suspicions are raised that these may also have been hazardous.

Gjovana Sokolaj, her sister and her husband, are involved in this illegal and criminal activity. I think we are facing a structured criminal group. Kurum and Sokolaj must be investigated. It must also go to the level of the heads of institutions. We go to the level of the customs directorate, the tax directorate, the environment minister, and so on. I do not believe that this story, structured criminal groups…

The uninvestigated part, the other waste produced by Kurum, where did it end up? How is it managed?

Nobody is giving us answers today. It is not just a matter of one prosecutor. I was skeptical, I considered it a matter that could be closed. But it is not a matter of two prosecutors. State authorities must tell us what happened to the Kurum waste. Will there be a seizure of the companies involved in this activity? It is the most serious environmental crime confirmed so far.

"It's good news that a hit was made, but the Durrës Prosecution Office must take it to SPAK and other state institutions must move urgently," said Lala.
