German media: Munich Airport withdraws from Vlora Airport project

Munich Airport will withdraw from consulting on the construction project of the new airport in Vlora.

German media outlets Merkur.de  and  Tz.de  report that this was announced by the city council today. According to the German media, the reason for this decision was protests by Albanian and foreign environmentalists.

Not only that, but there was also criticism of this project from the European Commission and the European Parliament.

It is considered the last wild river in Europe and a runway and control tower are currently being built there: it is the Vjosa River in Albania. The government there is moving ahead with the construction of the Vlora International Airport – despite fierce resistance from local conservatives and criticism from the European Commission and the European Parliament. The project has a connection to Munich: Munich Airport GmbH, a subsidiary of Munich International Airport, is acting as an advisor. As announced at the Munich City Council on Tuesday (April 8), Munich International Airport will withdraw from this activity at the end of April. The Green Party welcomed this in a statement, but warned that such dubious commitments should be avoided in the future.

The Albanian opposition has not only opposed the project on environmental protection grounds, but also on economic grounds, calling it a huge fine on Albanians.
