Ministry of Interior revokes permit for chrome mine in Katjel due to technical conditions

About two months after the disaster that occurred at the chrome mine in Katjel, where an employee lost his life, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy has decided to revoke the permit under the argument of severe technical conditions.
In a document signed at the beginning of this month but made public these days, the ministry argues the reasons for this decision.
"The National Authority for Safety and Emergencies in Mines, by letter No. 850 prot. AKSEM, dated 09.06.2025, protocoled at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy with No. 4146 Prot., dated 09.06.2025, proposed the revocation of Mining Exploitation Permit No. 1335, dated 15.04.2009, for chrome ore, at the "Katjeli Jugor" Facility, Municipality of Përrenjas, Elbasan District, following serious problems that have recently occurred at the facility, as a result of flooding at the Hz +428 level, the only level at which mining activity is carried out.
After several inspections by AKSEM at the facility, it was noted that the technical conditions are in a deteriorated state, with increased presence of water and sludge, deformation of the retaining reinforcements and overflowing capacity of the pumping system, which makes it impossible to carry out normal activities without risk to the lives of employees from Hz +428 to the well level Hz +655 , "the letter states.
Regarding this decision, the MEI has requested that in accordance with Law No. 10304, dated 15.07.2010 "On the mining sector in the Republic of Albania", as amended, Article 49, point 1, the holder of the mining permit in this case, the Katjel Chrome Mine Ltd., has the obligation to implement the final plan for the closure of the mining activity, the environmental rehabilitation of the area affected by the mining activity and the mining waste management plan, approved by the responsible AKBN structure.
This year alone, the ministry has announced 15 procedures for the revocation of mining permits, with reasons ranging from lack of mining activity for more than a year to failure to comply with obligations related to the payment of the guarantee./ Monitor
