A 52-year-old Albanian man has been arrested by the Carabinieri in the Bologna Apennines, after allegedly hitting a 69-year-old man with a car and then leaving the scene.
The incident occurred on Monday, when the victim, Gaetano Martone, a resident of the area and originally from Caserta, was hit while walking and died on the spot, media reports say .
The Carabinieri located a damaged Mercedes GLC 250 about 500 meters away and arrested the Albanian, who admitted to being the owner of the car and that he had fled the scene, but denied hitting anyone. He refused to submit to a breathalyzer test, but was later taken to hospital for a blood test.
The 52-year-old has been charged with vehicular homicide, failure to render aid and leaving the scene of the crime. The investigation is ongoing, coordinated by the Bologna Prosecutor's Office.
