Part of Turkish-Kurdish mafia gang, Albanian sentenced to nearly 5 years in prison in Italy

Italian justice is conducting one of the most high-profile trials involving a criminal drug trafficking gang in Milan, which was busted last year. Around 13 people were named as defendants.
The gang was led by a Turkish mobster named Baris Boyun, who was arrested along with his right-hand man, a 27-year-old Albanian, Artiol Shabani. The 27-year-old pleaded guilty and was sentenced to about 5 years in prison for weapons and drug trafficking in collaboration. Meanwhile, another person close to the 'head' of the gang is a 32-year-old Italian named Giorgio Meschini.
The trial of suspected associates of Turkish mafia boss Baris Boyun in a Milan bunker courtroom has been postponed until April for most of them, as they have requested a shortened trial. The shortened trial comes shortly after judge Roberto Crepaldi initially rejected a plea deal and then a shortened trial with probation.
Meschini, defended by lawyer Remigio Sicilia, has been in prison since May 22. The only Italian arrested in the raid that led to the capture of the Turkish boss.
Boyun, a 41-year-old ethnic Kurd, has long been a target of Turkey, which is seeking his extradition. According to the prosecution, he created a criminal cell in Italy made up of compatriots who specifically came to the country, with the support of an Albanian.
"Thirteen people requested alternative sentences. Yesterday, on March 25, the only person to have accepted the plea agreement was Artiol Shabani, for criminal association with the purpose of possessing and illegally possessing weapons, including clandestine ones, and drug trafficking. The 27-year-old Albanian, assisted by lawyer Samuele De Santis, pleaded guilty to 4 years and 7 months in prison, after the agreement reached with prosecutor Bruna Albertini was accepted by investigating judge Roberto Crepaldi. He received a third of the sentence reduction," Italian media reports.
Shabani, believed to be an associate of Boyun, who has no fixed address in Italy, was arrested in Vetralla along with another 23-year-old Turkish man. The search of the 'Jeep Cherokee' vehicle, with a Swiss license, in which they were traveling, led to the seizure of a 9×19 mm caliber pistol, three magazines, ten cartridges and 24.5 grams of cocaine divided into doses ready for sale.
The trial of the twelve other defendants, including Meschini from Viterbo, will continue in April with possible questioning of the defendants and the closing argument of the public prosecutor, who will formulate the requests for sentence. Then a series of hearings for the lawyers' speeches.
