Former German ambassador Werner Daum passes away while staying in Albania

Former German ambassador to Albania, Werner Daum, has passed away in Albania, the country he held in his heart and loved deeply. The German diplomat passed away at the age of 82, while he had been in our country for several days.
According to sources, he was found dead in his hotel room, while he had participated a few days earlier in the inauguration ceremony of the statue of the martyr of democracy, Josif Budo, in Kavaja, writes A2 CNN.
Werner Daum served as Germany’s ambassador to Tirana from 1987 to 1990, a crucial period for the country’s future. During this time, he showed extraordinary courage, opening the doors of the German embassy to Albanians seeking to escape the communist regime, an action he did in complete defiance of official instructions from his government.
In a later interview, Daum confessed that he had made this decision with full awareness, as he understood that a massive exodus of Albanians would accelerate the fall of the dictatorship.
During his visit to the Municipality of Kavaja, former German Ambassador Werner Daum was honored with a Certificate of Gratitude by Mayor Fisnik Qosja, for his contribution to the historical moments of 1990.
Daum recalled being in Albania from 1987 until July 1990, when the German embassy was physically and symbolically demolished. However, he said that period marked the birth of freedom in Albania, a change that did not come from outside, but from Albanians themselves, especially young people and intellectuals.
Daum respectfully remembered Ismail Kadare as a symbol of the free spirit and indicated that he too faced investigations by the regime for his meetings with him.
After leaving Albania, Daum worked to bring the country closer to the German public through a major exhibition in Munich (2001) and then in Vienna, with over 32,000 visitors. It included Albanian icons, artifacts and scenes from traditional life, highlighting Albanian beauty and heritage.
“I am proud to have helped bring this beauty to Germany,” Daum said, thanking Kavaja for the honor.
