"The trafficking was done openly, in the eyes of the authorities!"/

Journalist Ola Xama, invited to the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV, spoke about the affair with the hazardous waste of Kurum, which has so far resulted in 33 security measures for businessmen and officials.

Xama explained how the Kurum company has benefited at the expense of environmental pollution and all the institutional links that should have controlled it have failed.

"We have discussed it often, those suspicions and questions that we have raised in this studio are confirmed by the Prosecution. Although the investigation took a long time, we have 33 security measures for a group of people and companies involved in the trafficking of hazardous waste. What impresses you is, who has monitored the waste of one of the largest polluters in Albania, Kurum? If there is a heavy industry in Albania that pollutes, it is Kurum. Every step of control has failed. Periodic reports were made. We have also seen a handful of private companies involved and engaged in the trafficking of waste.

Why did Kurum need to traffic the hazardous waste it emits or not treat it according to legal provisions? Treating hazardous waste costs a lot. Both trafficking, emission, or their deposition and disappearance within the territory have health costs for all Albanian citizens. If someone is worried that they have a disease, that they have problems, even deformations of genes and new births, it is also, according to scientific studies, pollution. Therefore, we must be aware and demand accountability from institutions.

We see how a company, a foreign investor in Albania, has been favored and tolerated by Albanian institutions since '98 until today, at the expense of the iron processing industry, has earned millions of euros, and has put Albania on the map of countries involved in international waste trafficking.

On the other hand, we see that the entire institutional chain, customs, harbor master's office, port authority, ministry of environment, environmental agency, police, are all involved.

"There was no need to look for what was inside, but the codes and chemical formulas expressed in the customs and tax declarations do not match. The trafficking was done openly and in full view of the authorities ," said Xama.
