A serious event has shocked the Gjirokastra community today, where a 17-year-old was found without signs of life in his apartment in the village of Valarë on Sunday, April 20.
The young man, Vehip Peçi, a student at the "Siri Shapllo" high school, has ended his life by hanging himself.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., when he was urgently transported by his family to the Gjirokastra Regional Hospital, but doctors confirmed that the young man had died before arrival.
Sources close to the family say that the 17-year-old was going through a difficult psychological period. He had shown signs of isolation and melancholy, however, he was not under any regular medical treatment. Experts had suggested specialized intervention, but it seems that the signals were not taken seriously in time.
Vehipi had warned of the tragic act by telling his thoughts to some of his closest friends. Several notes were also found in the apartment, in which he apologizes to his parents, teachers, the psychologist who treated him, and friends for the concerns he thought he had caused.
He lived in the village of Valarë with his mother and two younger sisters, while his father worked as a cook on a ship in Greece and was often away from the family for long periods.
Police have seized the phone, the notes left behind and some personal belongings, and have begun questioning peers and school staff to help uncover the motive for the incident. Investigators are following several leads, including the possibility of a religious influence, although this is not considered a primary lead at this time.
The incident comes just two months after the suicide of another 17-year-old, Irsa Meçollari, from the same school. So far, police have not established any direct connection between the two cases, but are investigating whether there were similar motives or common influences.
Vehip Peçi was previously known as an active and sociable boy, with typical age-related difficulties, but without a history of bullying or extreme isolation from the school environment, making this tragedy even more inexplicable to the community.
The event has deeply shocked family, friends and the entire local community, while raising another alarm about adolescent mental health and the urgent need for systematic support and timely intervention.
