He killed his compatriot, the leader of the cocaine group in Belgium, 30 years

The popular jury of the great court of Flemish Brabant in Leuven has found Albanian Afrim Mema, 39 years old, guilty of murder in Strombeek-Bever and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. Edit Mema, 42, no blood relation to the perpetrator, was killed by four shots to the body and a fatal blow to the head. The victim turned out to be the head of an Albanian gang that traded cocaine internationally. Provocation or lawful self-defense in a dynamic event, as presented by the defense, was rejected by the jury. In its reasoning, the jury referred to the report of the doctors and ballistics experts. For example, there was a fatal contact shot through the head that was administered after four shots had already been fired. "The victim was more or less on his knees or bent over. Therefore, it is impossible that the death was accidental and there is not even the slightest doubt that he intended to take Ed Mema's life".

The jury also noted the calmness described by the witnesses and the police patrol. The preparatory actions and the attempt to destroy the traces also indicated a "cold-blooded act". A sign of premeditation for the jury was both the ready weapon and the backup weapon, the fast, folding bicycle. The jury also responded to the defense's version that there was provocation or self-defense. "Neither the investigation nor the hearing showed that he had an immediate reason to protect himself or his family." The threat posed by the victim to recover a lost cocaine shipment peaked after he was already in Belgium and already conducting surveillance. "Therefore, it is also certain that the threatening visit was not the reason for Ed Mema's death."

The jury noted in its reasoning that Afrim Mema had already been sentenced to two years in prison in his youth for aggravated assault.

"He did not learn any lesson from this punishment. During this trial, he showed a particularly weak sense of guilt, which was also evidenced by the limited mental examination which was discontinued at the defense's request. In front of the victims' families during the hearing, he showed some compassion." However, the jury considered as a mitigating circumstance Afrim Mema's difficult journey during his adolescence, which led to him being left on his own in the United Kingdom. With a sentence of 30 years in prison, the jury hopes to impress the convict. "The punishment, I hope, will allow him to become aware of the seriousness of the facts and will prevent him from committing new crimes," underlined the president of the Supreme Court.

Edit Mema, 42, was killed on April 8, 2020 by several bullets in a pizzeria in Strombeek-Bever, Grimbergen. The victim was the head of a gang of Albanian traffickers operating in the international cocaine traffic.

The perpetrator fled, but was arrested by the police in Merchtem a short time later. He had set fire to the vehicle in which the murder weapon was located, and then left on a bicycle. The investigation showed that the whole event was related to drug trafficking, and then it was discovered that the owner of the pizzeria who was killed was the head of a drug organization. After his death, his brother was placed at the head of the organization, while his wife held a secondary role for some time, until she was removed from the organization. In December 2020, a series of checks were carried out in the apartments of the suspects. This showed that the 12 members, mostly Albanians and Bulgarians, were importing and exporting cocaine from Strombeek-Bever. They traded at least 84 kilograms of cocaine.

"They imported the drug from Colombia to the Netherlands. They received cocaine with a purity level of 95 to 96%," said the prosecutor of the case.
