Attack on South Korean high school leaves 5 injured

An 18-year-old man stabbed five people inside a middle school in the city of Changju early this morning, seriously injuring three of them and slightly injuring two others, local police said.

The incident occurred at around 8:36 a.m. in a classroom at the school, about 110 kilometers south of the capital Seoul. Among the seriously injured is the school principal, who suffered injuries to his lower abdomen. A woman is also among the injured, whom the young man is suspected of trying to kill.

The perpetrator, who was himself slightly injured during the incident, tried to escape by running to a nearby park and then jumped into a lake. He was arrested just 12 minutes after the first police report and was immediately taken to hospital under observation.

"At this stage, we are investigating the motive and exact circumstances of the attack," a police official told AFP.

The incident has caused great shock in the country, which is generally known for its low crime rate. According to official data, South Korea had a murder rate of just 1.3 per 100,000 residents in 2021 – far below the global average of 6 per 100,000.

This case comes just months after another serious incident, when a teacher stabbed an 8-year-old girl to death at an elementary school, raising concerns about safety in educational institutions.
