151 injured in earthquake in Turkey, schools in Istanbul closed for two days

The number of people injured in the earthquake in Turkey has reached 151.

They were injured after jumping from heights due to panic caused by the earthquakes, the Istanbul governor's office says.

In a post on X, it adds that there were no recorded casualties and no residential buildings collapsed.

An abandoned building in the Fatih district of Istanbul collapsed.

Power and gas supplies, drinking water and sewage infrastructure are also intact, he adds.

Schools in Istanbul will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Education Minister Yusuf Tekin has announced.

He adds that no serious incidents have been reported at any school in the city and that school gardens will be open to the public to use as safe spaces.

A total of 51 aftershocks have been recorded following the powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Istanbul earlier, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

The strongest of them was 5.9, he says.

Yerlikaya adds that the 6.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded about seven kilometers underground and lasted 13 seconds.
