Bomb alert in Berlin, German police start checks

Only a few minutes separate us from the start of Euro 2024, Berlin has been alerted, due to a suspicious bag, which was spotted by the German police.

Part of the Euro 2024 fan zone near the Reichstag building in Berlin has been cleared by security forces after a suspicious backpack was discovered.

The bag was found at the entrance to the area dedicated to fans coming to watch the European championship in Germany and a man who was stopped for searches. Currently, Bild reports, many state police officers and the bomb squad have intervened at the scene.

"As a precautionary measure, a restricted area has been established. The bag is now being examined. It could also be that someone did not take it to the appropriate area, because the backpack is larger than the allowed format," said Berlin police spokeswoman Beate Ostertag. The restricted area is 200 meters wide and does not cover the entire fan area.

Three entrances are closed, one is still open. The incident currently has no impact on visits to the "Fan Mile" in front of the Brandenburg Gate, where access remains permitted.
