The 27 EU member states are expected to approve a broad list of US products that will face tariffs starting next week in response to President Trump's initial 25% import tax on European steel and aluminium last month. The European tariffs will be imposed in three phases.

From next Tuesday, April 15, the plan is to impose 25% tariffs on an initial list, which is likely to include motorcycles, luxury boats and orange juice. American bourbon, wine and milk were on the EU's original list but were removed after lobbying by the European wine industry.

The initial measures were due to start on April 1, but were put on hold to give talks a chance. EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen's request for a zero-tariff deal was rejected by Trump. A second phase will start in mid-May, expected to include textiles, leather products, eggs, dental floss and poultry.

Then, from December 1, counter-tariffs will be imposed on soybeans and almonds. Soy is used in animal feed and accounts for the largest value of US exports to Europe.

A new set of 20% US tariffs on EU imports went into effect today.
The European Commission is also preparing further countermeasures that could be announced next week.
