EU in contact with Spain and Portugal after power outages

The European Commission said today that it is in contact with Spanish and Portuguese authorities following massive power outages across the Iberian Peninsula.

“The Commission is in contact with the national authorities of Spain and Portugal… to understand the root cause and impact of the situation,” an EU spokeswoman in Brussels said.

"Protocols exist to restore the system's functionality," she added.

"Power grids across Spain and Portugal were disrupted at around 12:30 today, causing trains to stop," according to Spanish rail company Renfe.
