Bulgaria has the highest road accident death rate in the EU

Bulgaria has the highest road traffic death rate in Europe, with 81.6 deaths per million inhabitants, 78% above the EU average of 45.5 deaths per million inhabitants.
These are the results of the latest road accident data survey announced by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and analyzed by the Swiss website Vignetteswitzerland, which specializes in the official Swiss e-vignette market.
Romania is second with 81.1 road accident deaths per million inhabitants, 78% above the EU average.
A total of 1,545 deaths from traffic accidents were recorded in 2023. Serbia came in 3rd place with 75.7 road accident deaths per million, 65% above the average. In total, 503 deaths occurred on its roads in 2023.
Latvia followed in fourth place, with 75.4 road deaths per million inhabitants, 66% above the EU average, while Croatia had the fifth highest rate of road deaths per million in Europe, with 71.2, 56% higher than the EU average. Portugal was in the top six with 60.2 deaths per million inhabitants, 32% above the EU average.
Norway had the lowest road traffic death rate in Europe, with just 20 deaths per million, less than half the EU-27 average. Norway also had the lowest road traffic death rate in Europe, reducing road traffic deaths by 41% compared to 2013.
“While great strides have been made in road safety in recent decades, there is still much work to be done to continue reducing road traffic deaths. No country met its target of reducing road traffic deaths by 50% closer. We even saw increases from their rates in 2013,” said the website’s CEO, Mattijs Wijnmalen, and continued: “We wanted to see which European countries had the deadliest roads compared to our study, so we looked at deaths per million inhabitants to see which countries were doing better with road deaths and which had more room for improvement.
