CDU MP from Pforzheim, Gunther Krichbaum, becomes Minister of State

Pforzheim/Berlin – Gunther Krichbaum, the CDU member of the Bundestag from Pforzheim, will become Minister of State for Europe in the Foreign Ministry. The party announced this on Monday.

Ministers of State support the Minister of Foreign Affairs in government duties and perform mainly political functions. They have the status of a secretary of state and can act equally in official agreements and negotiations.

Coalition talks between the Union (CDU/CSU) and the SPD have been concluded.

Gunther Krichbaum expressed his joy at this new task and the trust that Friedrich Merz has shown in him. According to him, the chancellor-designate has often called him "the face of the CDU" in European politics.

"For the first time in more than 60 years, the CDU will lead the Foreign Ministry and this is a great challenge and an interesting task for me. Now, together with the new Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, we aim to significantly increase Germany's weight in Europe. We have a lot of work ahead of us ," Krichbaum declared.

He also added that this new assignment will not affect his commitment to the region and its people:

"I will continue to be an advocate for our Berlin region and will be available to citizens, businesses and municipalities in the future."

The CDU chairman in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Manuel Hagel, describes this appointment as an important function:

" With Gunther Krichbaum, a true European with a heart will breathe life into this important issue in government. Especially now, when signals of isolation are increasing at the international level, a strong and united Europe is more important than ever."

According to Hagel, Krichbaum knows Europe with all its diversity, as well as administration at the European level, and is the right person for this important role.

Katja Mast, Krichbaum's Social Democratic colleague in the Bundestag, also congratulated him:

"Today we also had personal contact – his appointment as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is good news for our region as well. His experience and long-term commitment to Europe speak for themselves."
