Negotiations fail in Austria, Chancellor Karl Nehammer announces his resignation

The Austrian political parties ÖVP and SPÖ did not even manage a day of negotiations together. On Saturday afternoon, the parties met for negotiations in Vienna. While in the evening, the ÖVP gave up not only the networks, but the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, said that he will resign and leave the head of the party.
"I will retire from the post of chancellor and chairman of the People's Party in the coming days and will enable an orderly transition of power," he said.
Nehamer previously warned against the strengthening of the radical political wing in Austria. "It is my deep conviction that radicals do not offer solutions to any single problem, but ensure their survival only by describing problems," said Nehammer. "This is bad for Austria and for the people in our country."
Austria's radical right won the most votes in September, but Nehammer has always refused to form a coalition with them. It is now unclear whether the ÖVP wants to negotiate a government with the FPÖ but without Nehammer.
Negotiations with the radical right or elections?
Will there now be a coalition with the FPÖ and what can happen next? Austrian political consultant Thomas Hofer sees two possibilities. "Now that Nehamer has de facto left, an orderly transition will be ensured. If anyone feels that there is another basis for discussion with the FPÖ, this is an opportunity. The other possibility is new elections."
The media of this EU country are even speculating with the return of former chancellor Sebastian Kurz. Hofer considers this possibility unrealistic. But according to some sources he is interested. Analysts, however, see the other possibility, the holding of new elections, as real.
Judging by the current polls, this would mostly go in favor of the radical right in the country. Now President Alexander Van der Bellen must declare the situation and after consultations with the political parties find the best solution for Austria. Van der Bellen previously gave the current chancellor Karl Nehammer the mandate to form the new coalition, but he failed./DW
