President Biden's son is accused of tax evasion

Federal prosecutors in the United States of America have filed an indictment against the son of President Joe Biden, for tax evasion.

Hunter Biden "spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle instead of paying taxes," special prosecutor David Weiss said in a statement.

According to the indictment, Biden schemed to evade taxes of at least $1.4 million between 2016 and 2019.

If convicted, Hunter Biden, 53, could face up to 17 years in prison.

Regarding this case, defense attorney Abbe Lowell accused prosecutor Weiss of "bowing to Republican pressure."

"Based on the facts and the law, if Hunter's last name had not been Biden, the charges in Delaware, and now in California, would not have been filed," Lowell said in a statement.

The White House declined to comment on the matter.

In September, Hunter Biden was indicted for illegal possession of a weapon.

The 53-year-old son of the American president has pleaded not guilty to this case.

In December 2020, Hunter Biden said he is being investigated for tax issues.

Hunter Biden had stated that he has taken this matter "very seriously" but added that he was convinced that an "objective review" would show that he had worked "legally and in an orderly manner".

Young Biden's legal troubles have become highly controversial issues in United States politics at a time when his father is seeking re-election as president .
