Support for Russian President Vladimir Putin has fallen for the seventh consecutive week, reaching 65.6%, the lowest level since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The data was published by the Russian state polling agency VTsIOM.
Putin, who took over the country in 1999 after being appointed by Boris Yeltsin, has been in power for more than two decades, either as president or prime minister. If he completes his current six-year term, he is expected to become the longest-serving leader of modern Russia, surpassing historical figures such as Joseph Stalin and Catherine the Great.
However, according to the survey, his popularity has declined significantly in recent weeks. From 73.3% in March, the rating has dropped to 65.6%, while the level of trust in him has fallen from 77% to 71%.
The reasons for this decline are not entirely clear, but are linked to economic difficulties and controversial measures taken by the authorities. Recently, Putin has ordered his staff to find ways to boost the economy, after a contraction in the first two months of the year. Meanwhile, restrictions on mobile internet, messaging apps and the use of VPNs have caused dissatisfaction among some citizens.
After the start of the war in Ukraine, Putin's popularity surged, reaching almost 80%, from around 64% previously. However, this support has begun to waver, especially after the mobilization measures in 2022.
Meanwhile, other political figures in Russia have also seen their trust levels drop. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin is at 53.8%, former President Dmitry Medvedev at 36.8%, Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov at 32.7% and Just Russia party leader Sergei Mironov at 29.8%.
On the eve of parliamentary elections expected to be held at the end of September, several analysts and public figures have warned of the need for reforms, highlighting the potential risk of social unrest if the current situation continues.
