Britain arrests four people suspected of helping Iran's secret service

Four people have been arrested in Britain as part of a counter-terrorism investigation linked to Iran, London's Metropolitan Police announced.

Police arrested an Iranian national and three people with dual British and Iranian citizenship on suspicion of aiding a foreign intelligence service.

According to police, the individuals are suspected of gathering information and monitoring places and individuals linked to the Jewish community in London, the BBC reports.

London's Counter Terrorism Policing Commander Helen Flanagan said the arrests were part of a long-running investigation and ongoing efforts to stop suspicious activity.

British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, speaking on ITV television, said that Iran is the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism and that these activities sometimes appear in British society. He stressed that intelligence services and police have prevented many attacks in recent years.

According to police, a 40-year-old and a 55-year-old were arrested in Barnet, a 52-year-old in Watford and a 22-year-old in Harrow.

Police checks are still ongoing in Watford, Barnet and at an address in Wembley.

Following Iran's retaliatory attacks on the US and Israel over the weekend, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Iran's actions and said the Iranian regime poses a direct threat to dissidents and to the Jewish community in Britain as well.

He added that over the last year alone, Iran has supported more than 20 potentially deadly attacks on British soil.
