Too much traffic on the roads, this European country gives young people 25

The Maltese government has launched a new initiative to combat heavy traffic in the country, offering a bonus of 25,000 euros to young people who agree to give up their driving license.

The program targets young people under the age of 30 and requires them to abstain from driving for a period of five years in exchange for a financial incentive. According to authorities, the first 100 beneficiaries have already registered for the scheme.

The initiative aims to reduce the number of vehicles on the country's roads and promote more sustainable modes of transportation. To facilitate the movement of citizens, the government has also provided for free use of buses.

The main reason for this policy is the traffic congestion on the island. Currently, there are around 457 thousand cars circulating in Malta, while in the last quarter of 2025 alone, over 3,700 new vehicles were registered. Given that the country's territory is only 317 km², the large number of vehicles has created great pressure on the road infrastructure.

According to the government of Prime Minister Robert Abela , the measure is part of a broader strategy for sustainable mobility and improving the quality of life in the country.

Those who benefit from the scheme and violate the rule by driving during this period risk a fine of 5 thousand euros and criminal prosecution. After the end of the five years, citizens who want to get their license back must attend a 15-hour training course.

In total, the government has made available around 25 million euros for this program, while half of the fund has already been used.
