Ecuador, four dead after 200-meter-long suspension bridge collapses

At least four people died when a 200-meter-long suspension bridge collapsed in southwestern Ecuador, the National Secretariat for Disaster Management announced on Friday.
The accident occurred in a small village, Daule, in the southwestern province of Guayas, when the bridge connecting the two banks of the Magro River collapsed while four trucks, a car and two motorcycles were on it.
The Secretariat announced yesterday via the social network X that the bodies of four missing people had been found, while the search for a fifth person continues. “Search and rescue teams are continuing their work,” the statement said.
Earlier yesterday, authorities reported three fatalities, two missing, and five injured, who are in stable condition.
According to initial investigation data, the cause of the collapse was an excessive load on the bridge, said the head of the local government in the province of Guayas, Marcela Aginaga.
The incident came as Ecuador is facing a heavy rainy season. Floods and landslides caused by the rainfall have so far killed about 20 people and damaged 45 bridges, according to the Secretariat for Disaster Management.
